Description

Boating brings the viewer close to two figures seated in a wooden boat on brilliant blue water. A man in white rests beside the tiller, while a woman in a striped dress reclines in the foreground beneath a decorated hat.

Edouard Manet combines the broad blue expanse with warm wood, pale clothing and quick strokes that suggest rippling water. The close viewpoint and cropped sail give the scene an informal immediacy, as though the viewer shares the small boat.
