Description

Berthe Morisot’s pale face looks forward beneath a dark hat, with ribbons and black clothing forming a close frame around the portrait. Manet concentrates the image through the contrast between her features and the heavier surrounding forms. The named sitter remains a particular person, while the graphic arrangement gives the likeness its own visual force.

The design dates to 1872–1874, while this lithograph on chine collé was published in 1884 and represents the second of two states. Lemercier & Cie. is credited as both printer and publisher. The later impression preserves the portrait beyond the time when Manet created the design, giving it a separate material history. Its interest lies in how a named human presence receives a graphic form whose printed surface can be encountered across different times and settings.
