Description
Édouard Manet’s Berthe Morisot in Silhouette offers a portrait through remarkably sparse contours. The head faces nearly forward, with the outline of hair and hat rising above a lightly indicated bodice. Open paper surrounds and enters the figure, so that recognition depends on the arrangement of a few marks rather than a fully shaded likeness.
Manet developed the lithograph in 1872–74, and it was published in 1884 by Lemercier. Although the title suggests a silhouette, the visible image is delicate and open rather than a solid black profile. Its economy gives Morisot’s presence a fleeting, intimate character, inviting attention to the shape of the head and the slight turns of line that make an individual emerge from the pale ground.
