Description

A Breton woman stands at the right of Paul Gauguin’s print, her dark blouse and pleated skirt set against the bright yellow ground. Split rails cross the left foreground, while a second woman bends along the path beyond. The arrangement moves between near and distant figures, giving an ordinary rural scene interest through contrasts, repetition and the barrier that divides its space.

Made in 1889 for the Volpini Suite, the work is a zincograph printed on yellow paper. The colored ground becomes an active part of the image, allowing dark marks and open areas to establish the scene together. Gauguin gives a modest subject the force of a composed arrangement, using printmaking to make ordinary appearances feel newly distinct. The work holds attention through that balance between recognizable rural life and the artist’s selective treatment of its forms.
