Description
Paul Gauguin’s Here We Make Love brings closely gathered bodies into a dark, vertical woodcut. The figures occupy the lower center beside a curving shore, while a paler field with lettering opens above them. The title provides an intimate association without explaining every form. Dark printed areas and cut textures connect the bodies to their surroundings, making the composition feel concentrated rather than expansive.
Designed in 1893–94, the print belongs to Noa Noa, or Fragrance. Its method lets the texture of the block remain an important part of the composition, while color adds another way of relating adjacent shapes. The subject is held within that constructed world of marks and passages. The scene’s intimacy comes through its concentration, allowing a small printed image to carry a meaning larger than the information its title provides.
