Description
In A Tahitian Woman with a Flower in Her Hair, Paul Gauguin presents a quiet profile framed by dark, flowing hair and a pale flower. Warm pink and earth tones soften the face and shoulders, while the dark background brings her thoughtful expression forward. The balance of firm contours and lightly worked passages gives the portrait an intimate, unfinished immediacy.
Created in 1891–92, the original is a drawing in charcoal, pastel, red chalk, and wash. Its layered materials allow Gauguin to move between strong outlines and delicate shading, giving the figure both presence and softness. The work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
