Description
An ornate vessel rises from a narrow pedestal base in Design for a Vase, a drawing after Polidoro da Caravaggio. Its rounded body, long neck and curling handles give the overall form a carefully balanced outline, while scrolling decoration enriches the surface. Pen and brown ink with wash make the imagined object legible on paper. The attribution identifies the design as transmitted through another artist’s hand rather than an autograph drawing.
A vessel design must bring ornament into relationship with structure, so the eye can move between the overall shape and the details that enrich it. The drawing permits those concerns to be examined together without the physical object being present. Line and wash turn an imagined form into something legible on paper. Its interest lies in the balance between usefulness and invention, with decorative thinking made visible through the organization of the surface.
