Description
Divers Trophées sets a towering, feather-crested helmet between two sweeping shields. A sphinx supports the crest, while curling ornament and overlapping weapons turn the surface into a puzzle of forms. Dense engraved shadows make the pale metalwork stand forward, and the curved inscription below gives the busy scene a clear center.
This 1651 engraving by René Lochon follows Charles Errard’s drawings after Polidoro da Caravaggio’s decorations at Palazzo Milesi in Rome. It celebrates the imaginative richness of antique military ornament, from broad shield shapes to the smallest engraved flourish.
