Description
Studies of Four Englishmen brings together caricatural figures from James Gillray’s separate prints, including Charles James Fox speaking in the House of Commons. Eugène Delacroix gathers expressive bodies rather than recording an actual meeting of the men. Their different appearances make the sheet an encounter with another artist’s visual language, where copied observations become a particular shared working surface.
Dating to around 1817–25, the drawing uses brush and brown ink on tracing paper. Delacroix’s attention to English caricature forms part of the work’s context, with the figures retained from Gillray’s designs rather than claimed as direct observations. The image’s interest lies in that act of looking across another artist’s work, where copying becomes a particular encounter with visual expression.
