Scene from Goethe’s Götz by Eugène Delacroix depicts Götz von Berlichingen seated at a table while a companion stands nearby. Hanging armor, heavy drapery and deep interior shadows surround the figures, setting an intimate act of writing within a martial world.

This lithograph, dated 1836–63, draws its subject from Goethe’s historical drama. The contrast between the reflective seated figure and the objects of battle gives the scene a subdued, contemplative tension.
