Description

Small standing figures in Moroccan men’s costume share Eugène Delacroix’s study sheet, with red caps and a pair of red slippers adding particular accents. The separate bodies occupy a pale field rather than one continuous setting. Seven costume studies become a place for comparison, where clothing and individual bearing can be considered through a range of neighboring observations.

Made in 1832, the work uses watercolor over graphite. Color gives the studies another register beyond the underlying drawing, allowing clothing to become an engaging part of the artist’s investigation. Delacroix’s sheet offers the intimacy of separate observations brought together, where comparison can remain attentive to particular forms. Its appeal lies in that variety, preserving a working encounter with appearance rather than requiring the figures to serve one completed narrative composition.
