Description
Romaine Lacaux sits facing the viewer in a white blouse and gray dress edged with dark trim. Flowers rest in her lap, while a pale curtain at the left answers the patterned floral background at the right. Auguste Renoir makes those fabrics distinct through delicate changes of light, keeping the girl’s face central while allowing clothing and surroundings to contribute their own color and texture.
Painted in 1864 in oil on fabric, the portrait was commissioned by the vacationing Lacaux family during Renoir’s stay in Barbizon. The Cleveland Museum of Art notes its sensitive color transitions and possible status as his earliest signed canvas. Those qualities belong to this particular likeness: delicate shifts across the child’s face and translucent materials make a formal portrait feel attentive to the individual sitter and the light around her.
