About The Red Kerchief
In The Red Kerchief, painted around 1868–1873, Claude Monet shows his wife Camille outside in the snow, seen through glass doors. Her red head covering draws the eye against the pale winter setting, while the door frame gives the scene an intimate, enclosed viewpoint. Broad strokes suggest snow and trees, and the briefly caught glance makes the portrait feel like a passing moment. Monet kept this painting throughout his life. The original now belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art.
