Claude Monet’s Camille Monet in Japanese Costume (1876), also known as La Japonaise, is a dazzling display of fabric, pattern and color. Camille turns toward the viewer in a richly embroidered red kimono, holding an open fan against a background scattered with more fans. A blond wig adds to the theatrical presentation. The painting reflects the enthusiasm for Japanese art and objects in nineteenth-century Paris, while giving Monet an opportunity to explore brilliant color on a grand scale. The original belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
