Description
Auguste Renoir’s The Apple Seller, painted around 1890, brings a small exchange into a loosely painted woodland setting. A seller bends at the left with a rounded basket, facing a seated woman and children whose pale and pink clothing catches the light. Green and blue foliage gathers behind them, while a small dog in the foreground adds a lively accent to the companionable group.
The seated woman is Renoir’s wife, Aline, while the boy may be the artist’s nephew Edmond; the other child is unidentified. Those different degrees of certainty leave the painting grounded in its documented figures without turning every person into a named character. Fluid brushwork connects their gestures with the landscape around them. The scene’s quietness is enlivened by the dog and the offering of fruit, making a modest act of exchange the center of a companionable outdoor gathering.
