Description
The Holy Trinity surrounds the Father and the body of Christ with a gathering of winged angels. A dove spreads its wings above them, completing the sacred group, while clouds and radiating lines fill the space below. The lifeless body rests across the Father’s lap, creating an unexpectedly intimate center within the expansive heavenly setting.
Albrecht Dürer gives the woodcut a powerful contrast between motion and stillness. Angels carry the instruments of the Passion, and the surrounding feathers, fabrics and curling clouds create a rich surface of interwoven lines. At the center, the weight of the supported body draws the eye back to sacrifice and compassion, making the image both ceremonial and deeply human.
