Description

Eugène Delacroix isolates a left forearm and hand in a faint graphite study. A bent thumb and extended fingers give the small subject a changing outline, while fine hatching helps distinguish the form’s surfaces. The limited view makes an ordinary bodily fragment substantial, allowing proportion and slight directional changes to become the drawing’s principal interest.

Made in graphite on laid paper, the study gives a hand the attention usually associated with a complete figure. Delacroix follows the relationship between arm and fingers, letting light marks describe both structure and a potential gesture. The surrounding openness keeps the fragment clear without requiring a story or named sitter. The image invites close observation of drawing’s simplest resources, where contour and a few tonal marks can give life to a small part of the human body.
