Description
A lion’s large frontal head and fur dominate Eugène Delacroix’s graphite study, with the body extending to the right and another head study nearby. The main face offers a direct encounter, while the additional observation keeps the sheet’s investigative character visible. One animal’s features become enough to sustain attention without requiring a broader scene of pursuit or conflict.
Dated August 30, 1841, the study uses graphite. That precise day gives the work a particular place within the artist’s practice without turning it into a larger historical event. Delacroix’s drawing brings the animal into the close scale of a work on paper, allowing looking itself to provide the subject’s significance. Its appeal lies in that concentration, where one head can sustain an encounter as compelling as a more expansive scene.
