Description

A large male nude curls across Delacroix’s study for Hercules and the Horses of Diomedes with a raised arm and bent leg, while expressive heads occupy the left. Eugène Delacroix develops studies for a fallen figure in Hercules and the Horses of Diomedes. The working arrangement connects bodily position with closer attention to the head, allowing separate observations to contribute to the preparation of a dramatic subject.

The 1852 graphite drawing gives those studies a direct drawn presence. Its interest lies in the relationship between a single figure and a larger work, where posture can be explored apart from the whole painted scene. The encounter preserves that process, allowing the studies to remain engaging as observations of human form rather than only as steps leading toward a completed composition.
