Description
View of London from Greenwich looks beyond Greenwich Park, the Naval Hospital and Thames leading toward the distant city. J. M. W. Turner gives the panorama a foreground of people, maps and globes, connecting the view with different ways of understanding the capital. A woman shows plans to a naval pensioner while another figure looks outward, making the act of surveying part of the landscape itself.
The 1825 watercolor combines ink with traces of graphite. Turner sets the broad city prospect against close human encounters, allowing foreground study and distant traffic to share attention. The river links the hospital with London beyond, while figures on the hill give the panorama a particular viewpoint. The image joins the scale of the capital to the smaller gestures through which people look at and interpret it.
