Description
Scene on the French Coast brings boats and people to a pier and shore near the left foreground, while a tall vessel rises at the right. Rough water and broad clouds give Turner’s French coast a larger atmospheric setting. The figures’ activity belongs to a shoreline that remains open to the energy of the sea beyond its immediate working space.
Published on June 11, 1807, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Charles Turner. This is the third of three states. The two techniques bring outlines and broad tonal passages into contact, giving the coastal setting its printed form. The landscape’s interest lies in the meeting of land and water, a boundary that offers human activity and a larger prospect beyond the shore.
