Description

In Two Dancers in a Rehearsal Room, Degas looks at ballet away from its public presentation. A dancer near the right foreground bends within the pale shapes of legs and tutu, while another appears farther back at the left. Upright room lines and a low bench give the figures a working setting. Gray tonal passages make the space feel compressed, concentrating attention on the dancers’ differing positions.

Made in 1877–78, the work combines aquatint, drypoint, and scraping. These techniques allow Degas to build areas of tone, add incisive lines, and remove material to regain light. Their interaction gives the image a varied surface rather than a single uniform texture. The subject and technique share a sense of active investigation: the dancers occupy a practice room, while Degas tests how their presence can be expressed through a printed plate.
