Description
Degas’s The Jet Earring concentrates an intimate portrait into a small dark field. A woman turns in left profile, her light face and ear standing out from the deeper tones of hair and surrounding cloth. The bright features emerge from ink that often merges description with shadow. The contrast between the compact image and the broader pale paper gives the encounter a particular closeness, asking the eye to linger over small changes of tone.
Made in 1876–77, this is a monotype printed in black ink. Its marks originate in ink worked on a plate and then transferred to paper, giving broad tonal areas a different character from an etched network of lines. Degas uses that flexibility to let description and shadow mingle. The title draws attention to a particular ornament, while the printing process gives the surrounding image its soft, condensed intensity.
