Description

Blue-green and olive tones spread across Edgar Degas’s Landscape, with a pale winding passage leading toward distant rolling forms. Gray-green trees and warmer slopes give the foreground a quiet structure, while hazier areas keep the view from becoming a precisely mapped place. The scene invites looking at the movement of color and atmosphere, allowing the landscape to approach abstraction without losing its connection to the land.

Made in 1892, the work combines a monotype in oil colors with pastel added over the printed image. It belongs to a group Degas called imaginary landscapes, although this view may reflect his travels through Burgundy by carriage. The layering of materials gives the land a surface both transferred and worked by hand. Its appeal lies in the meeting of recollection and invention, where a landscape becomes an atmospheric impression rather than a precise topographical account.
