Description
The Adoration of the Magi gathers richly dressed visitors before Mary and the infant in a partly ruined building. A king kneels close to the child while attendants crowd behind, and small angels appear above the broken stonework. The elaborate architecture creates a generous setting for an encounter whose emotional center remains the intimate gesture of homage.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut from The Life of the Virgin balances worldly splendor with the humility of the shelter. Hats, gifts and patterned garments bring variety to the visitors, while Mary’s seated presence steadies the scene. Openings in the building lead the eye between the gathering and the surrounding world, making the birth’s significance visible through both human attention and the transformed character of the place.
