Description
The Arms of the Holy Roman Empire and of the City of Nuremberg surrounds a central shield bearing a crowned imperial eagle with angels and the arms of Nuremberg. Above, two winged figures hold the sword and scales of justice, while clouds bind the heraldic elements into a single vertical arrangement. The large crown provides a strong central point within the dense pattern of wings, cloth and emblems.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut combines civic identity and imperial authority with the language of sacred guardianship. Firmly outlined shields contrast with the flowing forms of the angels, giving the composition both stability and movement. Close detail brings texture to feathers and folded fabric, while the repeated symmetry holds the crowded scene together. The image is engaging as an elaborate heraldic design whose smaller forms continually enrich its clear central structure.
