Description
In Christ Presented to the People, a crowd fills the foreground beneath a central balcony and the large arches of a substantial building. Rembrandt gives Christ Presented to the People a public setting in which architecture and witnesses frame the biblical action. The grouping below makes the presentation an event encountered by many, while the elevated area establishes a clear distinction between the figures shown and those looking toward them.
The 1655 drypoint is printed on Japanese paper. Its graphic marks give the biblical scene a substantial setting while allowing distinctions between the central action and surrounding witnesses. Rembrandt makes presentation itself the subject: the figure brought before others gains emphasis through his position within the gathering, joining a public event with the particular human relationships arranged across the image.
