Description
In Clump of Trees with a Vista, Rembrandt fills the left and center with dense foliage, opening toward a distant horizon beneath a broad pale sky. Dark growth and open space create different kinds of presence within the view. The modest landscape subject becomes engaging through this relationship between enclosure and distance rather than an elaborate human event.
Made in 1652, the work is a drypoint. Its engraved marks give the subject a material character distinct from a watercolor or an oil painting, allowing the landscape to be considered through the worked printed surface. Rembrandt makes a modest natural grouping sufficient to sustain a view. The image’s interest lies in that contrast of enclosure and openness, where trees become both a subject in their own right and a means of encountering the wider landscape.
