Description
In The unlucky death of Pepe Illo in the ring at Madrid, a figure lies exposed to the bull in a scene where the performance has become fatal. Francisco Goya’s The Unlucky Death of Pepe Illo in the Ring at Madrid brings the dangers of bullfighting to their most severe conclusion. The fallen man’s vulnerability changes the meaning of the surrounding action, replacing mastery with catastrophe.
The final numbered plate of the 1816 Tauromaquia recounts the death of the celebrated bullfighter Pepe Illo. Etching and tonal passages give the scene an urgent physical presence without transforming it into a triumphant spectacle. Goya places the consequences of the encounter before the viewer. Its gravity comes from the reversal of expectation, when the human skill admired throughout the series can no longer contain the animal’s force or protect the performer.
