Description

Francisco Goya’s Men in Sacks shows a line of figures enclosed so that only their heads remain visible. Their bundled bodies merge with the dark, empty setting, while one taller figure appears to dominate a group at the side. Small differences in posture and expression suggest a hierarchy within their shared confinement. The sacks make ordinary movement look both awkward and strangely impossible.

Created around 1815–1819 and published with the Disparates in 1864, the print gives bodily restriction a grotesque, almost theatrical form. Its precise meaning remains uncertain, and the strange arrangement need not be reduced to a single political or social message. Goya’s tonal darkness makes the figures seem partly swallowed by their surroundings. The result is an image of collective limitation in which the smallest visible gesture takes on an uneasy importance.
