Description
Cloud Study at Hampstead Heath sets a broad expanse of sky above a narrow, distant strip of land. Dark graphite lines gather into a large cloud at the upper right, while lighter passages leave much of the paper open. Small trees at the left give the view a point of scale. John Constable makes the contrast between that low horizon and the cloud’s spread the drawing’s central relationship.
Dated around 1821, the study belongs to Constable’s direct attention to atmospheric subjects. Its limited medium gives the pale paper an important role, supplying light between darker passages instead of covering the surface uniformly. Cloud Study at Hampstead Heath finds visual variety in a subject that can seem formless at first glance, bringing its separate masses into a relationship through the placing and density of drawn marks.
