Description
John Constable’s Cloud Study layers blue-gray clouds above a narrow band of distant land. The darker masses gather across the upper and right-hand sky, while pale golden and pink streaks run through the lower atmosphere. Small blue hills hold the horizon low in the picture. Watercolor lets the clouds range from dense forms to lighter passages, making their different weights and edges the scene’s principal movement.
Made in 1830–35, the study combines watercolor with a drawn framework. Its interest lies in how a fluid subject can acquire structure without losing the sense of change. Different densities of color make some passages more substantial and others more open, encouraging the eye to move between cloud masses and the lighter spaces around them. The sky becomes a landscape of its own, organized through tone, edge and atmosphere.
