Description
Peasant Pushing a Wheelbarrow shows a worker at the doorway of a rustic building. The close architectural setting gives the worker’s movement a destination, linking body and implement with the space they approach. Millet makes the practical encounter substantial through its compact arrangement, allowing a familiar piece of equipment to become part of how the human figure is understood.
Dated 1855, the etching is printed in brown-black ink on chine collé and represents the second of four states. Its particular printed support and tone belong to this impression, distinguishing it from a drawing or painting of the same kind of task. Millet allows everyday movement to carry the image’s interest, making the wheelbarrow part of the figure’s visible purpose. The work rewards attention to how ordinary labor can provide both a subject and a pictorial structure.
