Description
Woman Emptying a Bucket shows a woman stooping to pour into a smaller pot on the ground. A stone house wall occupies the right, while a garden opens the left, giving the practical action a domestic outdoor setting. The downward movement connects her body and the vessels, making an ordinary task visible through a clear relation of figure, objects and space.
Jean-François Millet drew the design, while Pierre Millet engraved it; this impression is a woodcut on laid paper in its only recorded state. The work joins a particular human task with a medium whose printed form depends on the engraver’s execution. Its interest lies in making a brief, familiar action sufficiently clear and substantial to sustain a complete image.
