Description
Woodcutter Making a Faggot shows a worker bending beside a stump and the cut wood gathered around it. Trees and trunks bring the surrounding woodland close, making the preparation of a bundle of firewood feel like one stage in a continuing cycle of practical work. The figure’s lowered body connects directly to the materials at his feet.
Jacques-Adrien Lavieille made this woodcut in 1853 after a design by Jean-François Millet. The compact black-and-white pattern distinguishes the worker from the rough textures of timber and ground, while keeping all three tightly interwoven. The old word in the title refers to a bundle of sticks. That simple object becomes the focus of the scene, linking human effort to the everyday need for fuel.
