Description

Night, from Four Times of the Day, brings the rural household into the concentrated light of a lamp. A figure bends at the left while a seated woman works with her hands at the right, their separate activities linked by the small illuminated center. The darkness surrounding them makes the room feel close, turning familiar domestic tasks into the scene’s main event.

This wood engraving by Jacques-Adrien Lavieille follows a design by Jean-François Millet. Fine marks carry light across the figures and furnishings, while denser passages hold the outer room in shadow. As a counterpart to the series’ outdoor hours, the image suggests that activity continues after daylight ends. Its quiet interest lies in the shared space, the modest source of illumination, and the persistence of everyday work.
