Description
Phaeton and Jupiter appear amid swirling storm clouds above billowing sails in this engraving after Pieter Bruegel the Elder. This classical encounter unfolds above an armed three-master and accompanying galleys. The eye travels between the vessels’ passage below and a sky alive with another scale of action.
Made by Frans Huys between 1561 and 1565, the print belongs to Bruegel’s ship designs. Its engraved lines give the maritime subject a particular precision while allowing a mythological event to enter the surrounding space. The image’s interest lies in that combination of different scales of action. A ship’s passage through the water and a story of divine power share the view, encouraging the viewer to consider the sea as both a navigable place and a stage for imaginative invention.
