Description

The Temptation of St. Anthony fills the landscape with unsettling creatures and transformations. An enormous fishlike monster dominates the center, its open mouth becoming a dark focal point among smaller beasts, flying forms and scattered structures. Made by Pieter van der Heyden after Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1556, the engraving treats the saint’s ordeal as a world that has become visually unstable. Each new detail offers another disturbance.

The composition’s density makes temptation feel pervasive rather than confined to one encounter. Human and animal forms mingle with inventions that resist familiar categories, while the carefully engraved lines lend them an improbable solidity. The scene invites close scrutiny without providing an easy place for the eye to rest. Anthony’s subject is spiritual endurance, but the surrounding spectacle turns that inward struggle into a crowded and disquieting external landscape.
