The Calling of Saint Matthew

The Calling of Saint Matthew by Caravaggio places five men around a table in a dim interior as Christ and Saint Peter enter from the right. Christ extends a hand toward the seated group, while a bearded man gestures toward himself and several companions turn to look. At the far left, two figures remain absorbed in the money on the table. A broad beam of light travels from the right across the room, illuminating faces and clothing at the table while much of the entering figures stays in shadow.

Painted in 1599–1600 for the Contarelli Chapel in Rome’s church of San Luigi dei Francesi, the work turns a biblical calling into an encounter among recognizably ordinary people. The bearded figure is traditionally identified as Matthew, although the scene’s gestures leave room for interpretation. Caravaggio links Christ’s invitation to the group’s varied responses through light and hands rather than an elaborate setting. The plain wall and dark surrounding space make the illuminated figures feel unusually near; the tension comes from the interruption of everyday activity by a moment that may change a life.

Ecce Homo

Ecce Homo, the Palazzo Bianco painting attributed to Caravaggio, presents Christ in a close group with an attendant and Pontius Pilate. Christ lowers his eyes beneath a crown of thorns, his bound hands resting around a reed. Pale skin and white cloth stand out against the dark setting. Behind him, an attendant holds a garment around his shoulders, while Pilate extends open hands toward the viewer. The cropped space, downward gaze and contrasting gestures give the scene a restrained but immediate tension.

The title means “Behold the man” and refers to Pilate’s presentation of Christ before the crowd. The painting is held at Palazzo Bianco in Genoa, whose museum describes its attribution to Caravaggio as controversial. That qualification matters: the work should not be presented as securely connected to a particular commission. Its visual force remains clear in the contrast between Christ’s quiet vulnerability and the surrounding figures’ actions. Light concentrates attention on faces, hands and the exposed body, making the biblical episode a close encounter with suffering and public display.
