Description
Caravaggio’s Basket of Fruit places a woven basket against an almost empty, pale background. Grapes, apples, and other fruit crowd together beneath spreading leaves. Small blemishes and curled foliage make the arrangement feel observed rather than perfected.
The basket rests close to the front edge, giving the still life an unusually direct presence. Its dark textures and varied colors stand clearly against the light ground. Caravaggio makes ordinary fruit compelling through careful attention to ripeness, surface, and the fragile condition of leaves.
