Description

In Self-Portrait with Plumed Cap and Lowered Sabre, Rembrandt presents himself within an oval arrangement, wearing a dark cape with a curved blade low at the right. His face turns slightly toward the right, giving the self-portrait a composed outward presence. Costume and weapon add a theatrical register to the likeness, allowing the artist to explore appearance through more than facial recognition alone.

The 1634 etching brings costume and a lowered weapon into the artist’s self-presentation. These details give the image a role beyond a neutral likeness, letting Rembrandt explore how a person can appear through dress and bearing. The encounter remains concentrated on the figure, where the outward display and the recognizable individual share attention rather than separating portrait from theatrical possibility.
