Description
Christ Driving the Money-Changers from the Temple is Rembrandt’s energetic treatment of the biblical expulsion of traders from a sacred space. In the etching of 1635, Christ raises a whip as people recoil and the surrounding activity breaks into disorder. The scene joins religious narrative with the bustle of a crowded gathering, making the confrontation feel bodily and immediate. Christ’s gesture provides the focus around which the movement of the other figures unfolds.
The composition gains its urgency from the interplay of command and reaction. Figures move away from Christ while the setting holds them within the same compressed encounter. Etched lines describe a world abruptly disturbed, inviting the viewer to follow the action across the scene. The work turns a familiar episode into a vivid moment of moral conflict. Its associated Metropolitan Museum of Art record is accession 17.37.182.
