Description
Two angels hold a cloth bearing the face of Christ between them in Sudarium Displayed by Two Angels. Their wings spread outward while folds of fabric sweep across the lower foreground. The thorn-crowned face looks directly toward the viewer, giving the small sacred image a solemn presence within the angels’ more animated forms.
Albrecht Dürer’s 1513 engraving builds the composition around a contrast of stillness and movement. Curling hair, feathers and strongly modeled robes frame the steady frontal face, while the angels’ hands keep the cloth carefully displayed. The arrangement makes presentation itself the devotional action, inviting attention to the image at the center without the distractions of a larger landscape or narrative.
