Description

In Thou who canst not, men bend beneath the weight of donkeys carried on their backs, reversing the usual relationship between human labor and animal service. Francisco Goya’s Thou Who Canst Not makes an unequal burden immediately visible. The donkeys seem comfortably installed, while the people supporting them must absorb the effort of keeping the arrangement intact.

Plate 42 of Los Caprichos, published in 1799, brings social hierarchy into the realm of absurd physical fact. Etching and burnished aquatint give both carriers and passengers substantial bodies, preventing the joke from becoming merely decorative. Goya’s satire asks who performs the work that supports those above. Its sharpness lies in the contrast between the awkward labor below and the easy occupation of privilege, turning an impossible scene into a recognizable account of unequal responsibility.
