Description

Flight into Egypt opens onto a broad, tree-filled landscape, with low trees at the left and a large dark tree occupying the right. The Holy Family appears as a small group on the path at the far right, belonging to a setting much larger than the travelers themselves. Their modest scale allows the landscape to remain a substantial subject alongside the biblical journey.

About 1653, Rembrandt altered an existing etching plate by Hercules Segers that had represented Tobias and the Angel. He reworked it with drypoint and burin to create the Flight into Egypt; this impression is the fifth of six states. The print therefore joins an inherited landscape with a changed narrative identity. Its history makes the familiar journey especially distinctive, as a new religious subject takes its place within another artist’s earlier terrain.
