Description

In The Hundred Guilder Print, Christ stands as a tall pale figure among kneeling and clustered people, with the sick at the right and a deep dark arch behind. Rembrandt gives The Hundred Guilder Print a varied gathering rather than a single isolated encounter. The luminous center draws different groups together, while the contrast between lightly worked figures and heavier shadow guides attention across the composition.

Dated 1648 in the Met’s current record, the print combines etching, engraving and drypoint. It brings episodes from Matthew’s nineteenth chapter together within one composition, allowing groups around Christ to receive different tonal emphasis. The familiar title derives from a later story about a costly impression, but the work’s enduring interest lies in its intricate balance of human encounter, radiant center and surrounding shadow.
