Description
In Studies of the Heads of Saskia and Others, a woman’s head occupies the center of the sheet, surrounded by four additional head studies. One figure at the lower left wears a broad hat, while the different orientations allow the faces to remain separate observations within a shared space. The arrangement gives the viewer several points of attention rather than one fully enclosed portrait.
Dated 1636, Studies of Heads, Including Saskia is an etching represented in its first of two states. The title identifies Saskia among the studies without requiring every face to receive a name. Rembrandt preserves the variety of looking that comes with a page of trials, letting individual features and directions remain active beside one another. The print makes the process of studying heads part of its appeal, with a small collection of human presences sharing one graphic field.
