Description
In The Small Lion Hunt with Two Lions, Rembrandt places hunters and trees at the left, with the animals among the active forms toward the center and right. Open pale space remains above the encounter. The two lions and the hunters’ company give the compact subject the dramatic character of a pursuit.
Made around 1632, the etching gives the hunt an intimate material scale. Rembrandt turns a subject associated with movement into a fixed image whose particular forms can be considered more slowly. Its interest lies in the concentration of action rather than the size of the sheet, making a limited field sufficient for a vigorous encounter. The print allows animals and people to remain participants in one represented event, preserving a moment whose energy extends beyond its immediate boundaries.
