Description

Jan Lutma sits in a dark coat, the knobs of his chair framing the figure while a window opens a lighter area at the back right. Rembrandt gives the Amsterdam metalworker a measured presence within the room. The brighter background lets the sitter’s face and clothing hold their own distinct emphasis, joining a recognizable individual with the setting and objects of his craft.

The 1656 print combines etching, engraving and drypoint. Lutma’s trade is represented through a held candlestick and metalwork and tools nearby, but Rembrandt keeps the craftsperson at the center of the portrayal. The relationship between person and objects gives professional identity a domestic scale, making the portrait engaging through the sitter’s presence rather than a separate catalog of his achievements.
