Description
The Artist’s Mother with Her Hand on Her Chest is an 18th-century etching after Rembrandt van Rijn, published by Johann Georg Hertel. The elderly sitter is shown at close range with one hand resting against her chest, her face and clothing described with compact etched lines.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art catalogs this impression as a later work after Rembrandt rather than an original print by him. Its small scale and concentrated pose preserve the intimate character associated with Rembrandt’s portrait studies.
